Resource Packages specification ready for prototyping
After a period of discussion & feedback, we have finalized the first version of the specification
The Resource Package specification we posted a while back has gone through multiple rounds of refinement and improvements, and is now ready to be handed off for an initial implementation in Firefox & other browsers.
Resource Packages provide a backwards-compatible, simple, efficient way to bundle up resources in a single file to make transfers faster and reduce HTTP overhead.
The changes made since the proposal was initially posted are:
- Added defined behavior for what happens when resources are defined twice.
- Added inline definition of resource package content in a manner that is compatible with HTML4/XHTML validators.
- Added Offline Resources support
- More FAQs answered based on feedback from mailing lists
We are now at a stage where I can hand this off for a prototype implementation — if you’re interested in helping out, let us know in this dev.platform thread. Check out the Resource Package specification here, and if you want to track its progress, you can subscribe to Bugzilla entry #529208.
